Roger Williams Park Zoo is currently recruiting for a full-time, year-round, Plumbing & HVAC Technician. Under the general supervision of the Facilities Manager, this position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of HVAC/plumbing systems, upgrades and preventative maintenance of these systems which includes, but is not limited to, ability to trouble shoot, repair, and install heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration units as necessary.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Install, adjust, and perform basic repairs and preventive maintenance on all HVAC and pump filtration systems. This includes diagnosing equipment malfunctions and operating efficiency of mechanical equipment (e.g. adjust burners, blowers and check for leaks) and diagnose the problem.
  • Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes workplace safety.
  • Assists in the seasonal overhaul and transition of systems from heating to cooling and vice versa.
  • Keep current on all HVAC and plumbing codes governing Zoo equipment.
  • Perform work on minor construction or remodeling, which includes installing fan coil units, pumps, exhaust fans and air compressors.
  • Maintains accurate records of maintenance records and equipment purchases such as work orders, time and materials on all HVAC units, hydrants drinkers, manholes, and control valves. Order and maintain an inventory of HVAC tools and materials.
  • Participate in snow and ice removal. The individual in this position is considered essential personnel should there be severe weather conditions or any zoo related emergency and is expected to respond accordingly.
  • Act as back-up for pump and filtration technician.
  • Help develop proper safety protocol and procedures for plumbing and HVAC equipment and provide training as needed.
  • Research and update department on new and energy efficient products in accordance with the R.I. Zoological Society environmental mission.

Education Requirements:
CRITERIA
Experience and Education:
Completion of high school diploma or equivalent plus knowledge of construction equipment acquired through a minimum of one-year related experience. Master HVAC License or be able to acquire within 60 days of being offered position. Bilingual in multiple languages is a plus.

Skills and Aptitudes:

  • Knowledge of repairing and maintenance of refrigerant lines, air ducts, basic carpentry, codes, and regulations of the HVAC field.
  • Adept at using a variety of tools, including hammers, wrenches, metal snips, electric drills, pipe cutters and benders, measurement gauges, and acetylene torches.
  • Ability to:
    • communicate both in verbal and written forms with all levels of management, staff, vendors, etc.,
    • work with a team, independently and with minimum supervision,
    • multi-task in a fast-paced environment to meet schedule and timelines,
    • occasionally lifts and/or moves objects up to 50 pounds,
    • read, interpret, and process information from blueprints, plans, and technical manuals,
    • work in confined spaces and climb a ladder to a maximum height of 40 feet.
  • During snowstorms, the employee is required to operate a snow blower and snowplow, which may require long periods of sitting and standing.

Additional Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Valid state driver’s license.
