Horticulturist/Supervisor for Green Animals Topiary Garden Portsmouth The Preservation Society of Newport County

General Job Requirements:

The Preservation Society of Newport County is seeking a full-time exempt Horticulturist, reporting to the Director of Gardens and Landscapes. This position is responsible for all horticulture operations at Green Animals Topiary Garden in Portsmouth, RI. Work schedule is primarily Monday through Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm. Special events may require work on evenings, weekends and/or holidays. Also required to work before/during/after storm related emergencies as required, and for any PSNC assigned location. Primarily responsible for all horticulture operations at Green Animals Topiary Garden to include; greenhouse growing & management, plant sale planning and execution, annual planting schemes, seasonal growing of fruits, vegetables, dahlias, roses and ornamental containers, oversite of grounds employees (grounds maintenance and garden staff) and volunteers at the Green Animals, overall security of grounds and the daily routine involved with operating the Green Animals site for public visitation. Job Responsibilities Supervises garden staff and ensures completion of daily assigned tasks. Under the direction of the Director of Grounds and Landscapes, selects, arranges and plants the gardens. May assist in research and proposal of new arrangements and/or topiaries. Performs routine checks on security of grounds and buildings on the property. Supervises the maintenance of topiary displays. Coordinates work of outside contractors with the Properties Supervisor. Operates and oversees maintenance of all garden equipment. Implements the established emergency plan for weather-related incidents. Monitor property supplies and cleaning products, reorder per guidelines as necessary. Responsible for the performance of clerical and to assist in managerial duties affecting those Garden/Grounds staff assigned to Green Animals. The evaluation of employees, the management of schedules and clocked hours of employees, and informed personnel and payroll decisions, all of which are to be made with the consent of the Director of Gardens & Grounds. Perform other related duties as required or directed.

Education Requirements:
BS in Horticulture, or related, plus field experience with a minimum of two years of documented supervisory experience. Five years of documented professional gardening experience, preferably in a public garden setting. Requires use of various hand tools and adjuncts such as wheelbarrows. Current/Active RI Pesticide License (must be maintained throughout employment) Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must be able to work in all weather conditions. Ability to multi-task and establish priorities. Ability to maintain flexible behavior and approach towards assignments and seek clarification of assignments and priorities when necessary. Ability to maintain organization in a changing environment. Possess a valid Driver’s License with clean driving record.
